UndocuJoy Through Writing

Embracing UndocuJoy
I embrace UndocuJoy by understanding that my life is a multifaceted one. Especially as an immigrant. Growing up undocumented resulted in a unique upbringing, one that was difficult to navigate but at the same had joy incorporated throughout.
Finding UndocuJoy
I reflect on my experiences of coming from an immigrant family and find new ways to tell my story. It can be one that is sad, joyful, one with laughter. I get to decide what I want to share, on my terms. This is one way I find undocujoy.
UndocuJoy Through Writing
I write stories based on my reflections of growing up, of experiences amongst family, navigating the education system, the workforce as a first-generation professional, and mental health. My goal is for others to find their own undocujoy and recognize that we have the ability to tell our story on our own terms.

About Me
My name is Elena Calderon. I consider myself a first-generation immigrant and first-generation professional. I was born in Mexico, raised in Washington State, and currently call Arizona home.
Forever A Student
I love learning! Education provided an outlet for me, a place of belonging when I felt most excluded, especially as an undocumented student. What I used to think was only a dream is now a reality, I’m a PhD student! I’m studying Higher Education at the University of Arizona. My research interests are based on undocumented students and how they navigate the transfer process from community colleges to universities.
